Sri Lanka's Scenic Train Ride from Demodara to Hatton
Welcome to the most scenic train ride in Asia…
Turn your phone and enjoy the views 👀
What I loved most about this train ride was that the journey was the destination.
For the first time in a while, I felt time slowing down. Taking in the views and hanging out the doorways was so liberating. It definitely lived up to the hype 😍
Here’s everything you need to know about booking this train ride, but if you have questions still feel free to drop them in the comments.
📌 Save this for when you visit Sri Lanka
Most people go Kandy to Ella but we wanted to leave early in the morning and cross over the nine arch bridge, so we booked the 6:25 AM train from Demodara to Hatton and it was just perfect! Highly recommend this route.
We also heard you have to book your ticket way in advance but we had no problem going to the Kandy train station and booking this train 2 days later. So I do recommend going a few days ahead to the train station to book your ticket.
We were told third class and second class are more or less the same, but I didn’t like how in third class we were stuck in our cabin and couldn’t walk freely to the other cabins with better views.
PRO TIP: book a seat in second class and walk to a doorway towards the middle of the train so when you look out, you can see the train in both directions (its really beautiful when there is a curve)
Route:
1. We booked our tickets at the train station in Kandy, but you could also go directly to Demodara or Ella
2. We booked the first ticket out of Demodara (6:25 AM) and went to Hatton (takes 5-6 hours)
3. We waited in Hatton, had lunch near the train station, and about 1.5 hours later took the train back to Ella
Have I convinced you to add this adventure to your bucket list? 🚂✨
