Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge: Finding Beauty in Unexpected Places
Mountains in Oklahoma? At less than 2,500 feet, the Wichita Mountains aren’t massive, but when compared to the surrounding plains, they are definitely taller in comparison.
This wildlife refuge just north of the Red River in Oklahoma is home to bison, longhorns, and assorted wildlife. Learn at the Visitor Center, drive around counting the “tatonka”, go on a hike, or just drive around from the AC of your car when it’s 95 degrees in June.
This mom did not want to add a rattlesnake to the wildlife count for the day. I need to plan a return trip during a not-summer trip to my homeland.
I don’t know how many times I said, “Just because it isn’t Colorado mountains, that doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty and worth seeing.” I’m trying to raise kids who see the beauty in all the places and not just the best of the best. The struggle is real to not raise travel-spoiled brats… I’m failing at times. 😉
Add this to your Oklahoma bucket list and go find a Buffalo.
