Exploring Native American Culture at Comanche Museum

My kid: “I don’t need to know this. It’s not like it will ever be on a test.” Fighting words for this Mama. He’s probably right, sadly. We spend more time learning ancient history across the world than our own right here. (This is the difficult kid, btw 🤦) Almost half - sounds important, right? Oklahoma is 43% Native American tribal land comprised of 39 nations. Everywhere you see signs for reservations and casinos. Many towns have museums. The Comanche National Museum in Lawton, Oklahoma isn’t a big place. If nothing else, I hope it solidified further that Native Americans aren’t just stories of the past and books. They are real life people who still live and breathe and drive cars with their nations on the license place instead of US. “New” info for the kids was about the Comanche code talkers in WW2. We’ve talked about this, but maybe this time it will stick? Other than watching Windtalkers, give me resources. Any Comanche specific books? Stories about Quanah Parker? We must do better. Bonus fact: did you know Johnny Depp is an honorary member of the Comanche tribe because of his role in The Lone Ranger? 😃
