Visit Fort McHenry on Your Family Road Trip
Quit driving past important places on your road trips!
👉Fort McHenry.
❓Heard of it?
Don’t just drive quickly from DC to Philadelphia. Take a break on your family road trip in Baltimore.
Let’s go back to the War of 1812.
[Insert time travel music. 😃]
After British forces burned DC in 1814, they turned south toward Baltimore. Rockets and bombs landed on Fort McHenry for 24 hours… and in the morning, the locals saw the fort still stood in American hands. They had defeated the mighty British navy.
Or as Francis Scott Key wrote…
“And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”
Yes, that Fort McHenry. 🫡
🇺🇸Learn the fort’s history up to World War 2 at the small visitor center.
🇺🇸Stand for the national anthem as the video screen lifts to show the flag flying over the harbor.
🇺🇸Wander the fort’s earthenwork walls looking out across Chesapeake Bay.
🇺🇸Stand next to the giant cannon. Peer into the underground bunkers.
🇺🇸Enter the rooms of the fort and learn how the soldiers lived.
Fort McHenry is the only National Monument and Historic Shrine in the United States. (Although I still can’t find a place telling me why. 😜) Sounds important though!
👉Save this to add Fort McHenry to your family DC travel plan.
👉Or Philadelphia vacation.
👉Or homeschool travel.
👉Or history road trip.
Or… Just quit overlooking the less-visiting to beat the crowd at the crazy.
Doesn’t mean it’s less important.
Just means you’re wiser. 😉
