Surfing Lessons in Costa Rica: Expectations vs Reality
Family travel means trying new things and having experiences you can’t have at home. 🏄♀️🌊💪
For us, Costa Rica brought surfing - no I didn’t participate 😂.
One of my kids had never been surfing and desperately wanted lessons. Only minutes from our Quepos, Costa Rica rental house was Manuel Antonio Beach - and they offered surfing lessons. Ta da!
Surfing did not go as expected…

🌊Book a short lesson. It is much more tiring than you would think from the sun and sand and swimming.
🌊Wear a rash guard for sun protection as well as board protection. The tighter and more fitted the better, but my boys still had sore chests. (Help! Hit me with your life suggestions here!)
🌊Good beaches for surfing do not make good beaches for kids who are not surfing. If you have waves enough for surf lessons, the surf will be too strong for littles to play.
🌊Prepare for injuries. My kids and husband all had skinned knees and arms from jumping on the boards. Wax keeps you from sliding but also keeps you from sliding - you skin will suffer.
🌊Look online for beach recommendations. Surfers have beaches ranked by level of surfing; don’t head out for more than your little surfers can handle.
