Understanding 9/11 Through Children's Books

September 11th learning also needs to include background and context to understand today’s events. Here is the rest of my current stack - while I wait on some of your recommendations to come in! (Flip through to see more of the titles!) . . 📕14 Cows for America - The real life story of the Maasai from Kenya and how they supported America’s 9/11 grief. By Carmen Agra Deedy, Thomas Gonzalez. . 📗The Man Who Walked Between the Towers - This 2004 Caldecott book opens and closes with mention of the towers being gone, but is mostly about @philippepetit_manonwire and his high wire walking in 1973 between the towers. This would be a good intro for younger kids. By Mordicai Gerstein . 📘Malala: Activist for Girls’ Education - This is about Pakistan, but I’m counting it because Malala suffered through Taliban rules and restrictions of her education. It had great back notes about other activists and her real-life work. @raphaele.frier @aureliafronty @malala @charlesbridgepublishing . 📙The Library Bus - Based on real life growing up in Kabul, this book tells of education struggles for women under the Taliban and refugee camps. Bahram Rahman @gabriellegrimard_illustratrice P: @pajamapressbooks . 📕Nasreen’s Secret School - Based on a true story of a grandma and a girl in Afghanistan and their struggle to get her an education under the Taliban. Look for the stats in the front comparing pre-Taliban to during Taliban. Jeanette Winter. @beachlanebooks @globalfundforchildren . . The only other picture book (other than America is Under Attack from my last post) is Fireboat about rescuing survivors in NYC. Also The Man in the Red Bandanna - which is also a free documentary you can stream through IMDB. We will watch this! . Middle Grade suggestions y’all gave are: Towers Falling - Rhodes Eleven - Tom Rogers The Day the World Came to Town - Jim deFeda ⭐️⭐️⭐️Shooting Kabul - excellent! Ground Zero - Gratz I am Malala - on my to read list. . . Thanks for all the extra suggestions. I hope this list helps you have some good family learning and discussions. Save it for the library - I know I am 🤓 . . ❤️ @reclaimingwonders
