Reclaiming Wonders
A suburban driveway is framed by lush greenery and trees, forming a natural backdrop. A small group of children, ranging in age from young to pre-teen, are engaged in an energetic game of four square. Some children are holding chalk and a ball, while others are standing or crouching, ready to participate. A blue bucket, whimsically named 'Cork,' is positioned on the driveway, adding an element of playfulness to the scene. The children's expressions convey a sense of joy and camaraderie as they immerse themselves in this classic outdoor game.

Kids' Outdoor Fun: Four Square and Imaginative Play

Usually when you have “a lot” of kids, people joke about you trying to make a sports team... At four, I managed to fall short. However, the kids were bored. I pointed out last week that they have chalk and a ball and a driveway... and four people. And now they play four square. Several times a day. Usually until someone gets Injured or annoyed or feels cheated. But those angers are short lived. And they’re back outside several hours later. And sometimes, in ultimate silliness, they make the bucket a friend, name him Cork, and move him around, giving him different roles in the game. I know this phase is short lived until they move onto the next outdoor activity. But for now, keepin’ it simple. And grateful they have enough for their own special team.
