History Comes Alive at the Museum
The Civil War Museum manager watched my oldest pay no attention to the cane chair. And he came over and talked to us about it.
.
.
Told us the whole story of Hannah Reynold, a slave who was the last casualty of Appomattox. She was wounded as a slave and died as a free woman. This was her chair. The legs sawn off so she was never higher than her master.
.
.
M declared that chair now her favorite part of the museum. Maybe they’ll pay more attention to museums with furniture now ;) C said it reminded him of English museums - who wants to look at furniture?
.
.
And a reminder to me that we learn so much more when taught by a person who loves that they’re doing. I need to sign up for tours more. And why do kids complain about something only to enjoy it? Gut reaction: whine.
