Hands-On Math Learning with Boaler's Mindset Approach

Confession: Math curriculums make me mad. Seven years into homeschooling, and I still don’t teach math “properly” to my kids. I try. I’ve brought several different brands of curriculum. And don’t stick with them. I skip huge sections because my kids know how to do stuff or do 1/3 of the problems because it just doesn’t take that long to learn it. Or want to teach it a different way. . . Then a lightbulb!💡I found Jo Boaler —- go to YouTube and just watch a video. Read her books. Implement the ideas. My math life changed. . . She preaches math mindset and math thinking. It’s not about completing the worksheets but knowing and understanding. And this is what we do plus games ;) . . With just a dry erase board, dice, cards, play money... You can do math. Write a number, add a decimal, add it, round it, show me with money, read it out loud properly. Use really big numbers, put in the commas in the correct place, multiply it, talk about real world application, spell the number.... . . Talk about math. And ask alllll the questions. Your kids get more out of this time thinking math with you than a stack of math worksheets. Don’t get me wrong. One kid prefers worksheets so that’s what we do —- but we talk about them too. . . As for my 7th grader... more strict book work is in her future but still with these principles tied in. But those littles? They’re rocking math and ask to “do math” so something’s working ;). I encourage you change your viewpoint! It’s so much more fun ;). And thank you @jo.boaler for challenging us to be different!
