Exploring Historic Ironclads at the Civil War Naval Museum
Four Civil War ironclads are left. One in Georgia. Just go!

Pictures can’t do justice to how big the CSS Jackson is and was. The metal frame over shows the original size and smokestack of this ironclad; the wood is all that is left. At 220 feet long, the building was built around it, and I can only capture half of it at a time in a picture.

The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus isn’t big, but it packs a punch. There are also the remains of the gunboat Chatahoochee and rebuilds of several more. We walked through several reconstructed parts, saw iron remains going through cleaning, and read a lot about all the ships in the navy at the time through a really cool giant painting.

This museum really is a treasure and totally worth it. Especially if you have free reciprocity like I do!

We had read several books about ironclads and now need to go back and reread them. Too cool! Go support this under-visited museum!
