Discover Cahokia Mounds: Ancient Native American Settlement Near St. Louis
Did you know the largest ancient settlement north of Mexico is just fifteen minutes east of St. Louis? 🇺🇸🚙🗿
US history doesn’t start in 1492!
And you need to visit some of these places.
.
.
‼️But how if you don’t even know it’s there.
🤝Let’s meet the Cahokia Mounds.
Impressive stats:
🔹15-20,000 people lived at Cahokia. That’s no small little town!
🔹It’s one of only 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the US.
🔹80 mounds remains of the original 120.
🔹The largest one, Monks Mound, is about 100 feet high and has a base the same size as the Great Pyramid of Giza.
❓Are you impressed yet? This is why we should visit these amazing US history sites!
Alas…
😞I didn’t even know there were Indian mounds in the United States until we memorized a @ClassicalConversations sentence our first year of homeschooling.
The Native American history of my youth were teepees and buffalo and Dances with the Wolves…
On a family road trip, I found our first mound to visit at Emerald Mound on @theNatchezTrace in Mississippi.
Then, I saw signs all over the highway pointing to mounds as we drove through the southeastern US.
