Thanks to an overloaded schedule followed by a nice little virus, I took a long 10-day break from Instagram these days. And I’ve been thinking a lot about burnout. Because it’s a problem.

You know the saying “find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”? Allow me to respectfully say that saying is bullshit.

You can love your job and love your co-workers and still get exhausted. And have to work on aspects of it you don’t like. And sometimes deal with shitty clients, days, situations. No job is a 24/7 festival of rainbows and unicorns, and whoever tells you that is lying to you, or just in a real happy mood for those five minutes they happen to be speaking to you.

You can have bad, overloaded days that sometimes suck the joy out of even things you like. Or very simply, you can be at the job you love and still be thinking about how you haven’t spent a lot of time with friends and family, or being social in general, or engaging in a hobby or relaxing activity you enjoy, or even just giving yourself the luxury of turning your brain off for an hour and truly resting.

Even when you have to be at your busiest, even when you want to push a lot of things forward, make sure you’re giving yourself some non-work and non-chore time. We are humans, not robots. Workaholism will never be a path to fulfillment, and it will mentally and physically break you down.

That being said, I’ve had an insanely busy morning since 7 AM, so I’m now going to take an hour to cook something delicious while listening to my favorite podcast, and give myself permission to do jack shit for an hour. What do you like to do to relax?
