How did Christmas Markets start?! Pictured: a Christmas Market in #Stockholm, Sweden.
These markets started in Germany and are now widespread throughout Northern Europe. What began in the Late Middle Ages as an opportunity for villagers to stock up on supplies heading into the frigid winter months, became a festive, celebratory event people looked forward to every year.
In Germany, where these markets originated, darkness lasts for around 17 hours in December; in Scandinavia the nights are even longer.
So beyond the practical purpose that started these markets, these decorated stalls that light up at night give people in colder climates the opportunity to gather outside and enjoy some holiday cheer during those long winter months. Also, to do some last minute gift shopping.
