Night falls in Mytilene, Lesvos.
I visited #Lesvos for the first time ten days ago. It doesn’t top most tourists’ lists - and that’s actually a shame because there are a lot of incredible things to discover here.
The third biggest island in Greece, with a pretty large permanent population (115,000), Lesvos or Lesbos is known for its ouzo, being the birthplace of ancient sexually ambiguous poet Sappho (hence the origin of the word “lesbian”), and more recently, for the countless Syrian refugees who sought shelter here after crossing the water from nearby Turkey (just 11-12 km, or around 7 miles distance between the nearest points).
I will get into all of the above in a post, but Lesvos has so many incredible things to offer: an ancient petrified forest, a gorgeous castle town perched high up on its coast, old aristocratic manors, traditional cafes, stunning small towns.
