Jessie on a Journey
Two women, one with vibrant rainbow-colored hair and the other with dark hair, stand side by side in what appears to be a home kitchen. They are both wearing aprons, one in a bold pink color and the other in a bright red with text that reads 'Happy Girl Damiera Cooking!' They are leaning over a floral-patterned tablecloth, rolling out dough or preparing food together. The scene exudes a sense of cultural exchange, culinary exploration, and shared joy in the cooking experience.

Immersive Uzbekistan Cooking Experience in Brooklyn Home

One of the coolest things I've EVER done in NYC: an immersive Uzbekistan cooking workshop in the home of an Uzbek immigrant. Wow! I spent my day with Damira, a woman who moved to Brooklyn from Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 2013 to be closer to her children who were studying in America. Through the League of Kitchens cooking program I was able to enter her home to hear her story, learn her family recipes and have a cultural exchange. Many of the dishes highlighted the medicinal properties of food. For instance, while making beef and vegetable stew Damira explained that one cilantro seed per day keeps the doctor away, that pungent Uzbek cumin naturally kills food-borne bacteria and that cabbage is an anti-inflammatory. In fact, I’m told that if I’m ever feeling pain I can bandage a cabbage leaf to the area that hurts and it will go away.
