Tips for Visiting the Lost City of Petra
What to know before visiting Petra ❤️
Did you know that Petra is one of the new seven wonders of the world? And yet archaeologists have uncovered just 15 percent of the Lost City. 😱
Visiting Petra is probably already on your bucket list, but here are a few things to know before your trip!
🎟 You can purchase a Jordan pass online for 70 JOD (about $100 USD) and that includes 1 visit to Petra. If you’d like to visit over 2 days, be sure to purchase the Jordan pass that permits you to do so (75 JOD). Alternatively, you can purchase a ticket at Petra for 50 JOD (1 day) and 55 JOD (2 days).
⏰ The Visitor Center opens at 6am and that is the best time to enjoy Petra before it gets too crowded and hot.
🚶♀️ You’ll walk a lot - we did over 20,000 steps / day! So wear comfortable shoes, bring water (you can buy it here but it’s plastic & overpriced).
🍴 There are places to stop and grab a bite in case you don’t feel like bringing lunch, though we enjoyed bringing a lunchbox that our airbnb host was selling (sandwiches, fruit, juice, crackers/ cookies) and found a spot in the shade to enjoy it.
🏠 Stay at ‘Petra FarmStay’ on @airbnb if you have a car. It’s just a quick 5 min drive from the entrance to Petra, yet it’s removed from the noise and touristic area that surrounds Petra so you have a peaceful sanctuary to retreat to after a long day!
🗺 Get a map so you can see the different walking routes around Petra. We did two different routes over two days. If you only have one day, focus on heading to the Treasury, which is a climb of around 850 steps!
💵 Bring cash and consider hiring a Bedouin to take you to a higher viewpoint of the Treasury. You can go up on the left or right side. We went on the right side which doesn’t go as high, but takes less time and offers a beautiful view. They also provide a delicious cup of tea with sage when you get there.
