How Safe is Costa Rica for Travel?
How safe did you feel in Costa Rica?
I got this question the other day and wanted to share in case you are interested in traveling to Costa Rica in the near future and are wondering the same thing!
In my experience, I felt extremely safe. That being said, I traveled with another Creator for most of the trip and we intentionally tried to avoid driving at night. If you’re planning to roadtrip around Costa Rica, for your safety I would encourage you to do the same.
I did rent a car and travel solo from San Jose - La Fortuna. For this leg of my trip, I also planned to drive during the day for my safety, especially since I was alone.
The only time I personally felt a bit nervous was in San Jose, not because I saw anything happen or felt threatened in any way, but because I was warned several times by multiple different people to be careful and to not walk alone especially after dark.
So if you are going to spend anytime in San Jose, I would recommend doing some research and staying in an area with positive reviews. Also, avoid going out alone at night if possible.
This all being said, feeling safe is subjective and I am only speaking from my personal experience. However, I did some research and found that according to the latest Global Peace Index update, Costa Rica is considered the safest country in Latin America. 🫶
Hopefully this helps bring you some peace of mind for your next trip to Costa Rica!
