Reclaiming Wonders
The image depicts the covers of two children's books about historical events. The book on the left, titled 'Kid Blink Beats the World' by Don Brown, features an illustration of a young boy with a newsboy cap and fist raised, surrounded by other children in a similar style, representing the Newsboys Strike of 1899. The book on the right is titled 'Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909' and shows a young girl with a determined expression and raised fist, likely representing Clara Lemlich, a leader of the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike. The illustrations are colorful and evocative, capturing the spirit of the labor movements and the courage of the young workers fighting for better conditions.

Engaging Children's Books on Labor Movements

Newsies the book?!! I stumbled across it at the library when looking for books for the Industrial Revolution. .. I decided that showing working class conditions would have to do. Are there no lovely living books about this topic specifically? . Using our love of Newsies as a jumping point, this book was great to get their interest up. Add to that the girl strikers ten years later and the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. .. We’re learning about the end results of the time through some great biographical kid books. Immigrants, tenements, workers unions, and how good kids have it now. Still some great jumping off points. .. With great pictures. .. There have to be good books about this time period and WW1 that aren’t just boring textbook type fact books, right? I can’t just hope to accidentally find some more.
