Reclaiming Wonders
A young girl with long blonde hair is climbing on a colorful playground structure in an outdoor park setting. The playground equipment is made of red metal bars and features various platforms and ladders for climbing. The girl is wearing a black shirt, teal shorts, and teal sneakers. She is gripping one of the red bars with her hands as she balances herself on a platform, displaying her physical capability and coordination. The background shows a grassy area with some distant buildings or homes visible, indicating a neighborhood park or community recreational space.

Encouraging Outdoor Free Play for Kid Development

I’ve been listening to Barefoot and Balanced on the drive and wishing I had read it at the beginning of motherhood. It should be a required reading for all teachers, moms, medical professionals, and anyone involved with kids. Homeschooling gives us a lot of ability to be outside, but still not the four to five hours a day they are recommending of FREE play. Not structured sports or lessons or business... free play. I need to work on more barefoot kids outside to strengthen arches and search for more parks with merry-go-rounds and see saws for vestibular and balance development. And less telling to “be careful!” Very interesting science written by an occupational therapist and backed by scientific studies. As a society, we over protect our kids when they need to be rough and tumble kids to deal with the world and develop naturally.
