Promoting Mountain Etiquette and Safety
Let’s make the mountain a nicer place for everyone this year! ❄️💙
Rule 1 of skiing and snowboarding is to always stay in control, and the second most common rule is that the person downhill to you has the right away. However, people seem to be getting stuck there and livid if anyone breaks that, but there are so many details involved that make this rule nuanced. Such as:
🎿 When trails are merging, its your responsibility to look up the other hill and gauge your line from there
👀 If stopped on a run, when starting downhill again, check above you to see where and how those people are coming down. It’s not the responsibility of the people already moving to know exactly when you’ll start moving and in what direction
👯♀️Please be mindful on cat tracks. No group of people should be taking up the entire width. It doesn’t matter what you ride, if you’re trying to get past, or need to keep up speed, that makes for a very dangerous situation
🏂 If you are a more advanced skier/rider and notice this, it’s nice to take initiative and break up the width so there is room for people to get by
👀 Always be aware. On cat tracks especially. YES it is ultimately the uphill persons responsibility, but when someone makes a hard, erratic cut and cuts off the only available line - it puts the downhill person in danger too
🏎️ I think about this like driving. We all expect everyone to follow the rules and be safe, but I still check my blind spots when merging. If someone in a vehicle cuts across 3 lanes in traffic, they are likely to get rear ended. A car and a person only have so much breaking capacity, no matter how good the driver is
🤝 And finally, let’s put an end to the skiier/snowboarder feud! Let’s be honest, it’s just nice people and as*holes 😋 there are kind, thoughtful people who do both. We know by now that skiers and snowboarders move differently on different terrain and it’s time we became aware and adaptable to that instead of pitting against each other.
