Do You Need a Photography Degree?

Do you think you need to go to school to learn photography? I get this question a loooooot! Especially because I did go to school for photography. For those of you that are new here or don’t know, yes, I have a Bachelors of Fine Art Photography degree and within that was required to learn a bit of video as well. I’ve been working in the industry since 2013 and have experience in consumer portraiture, fine art collection, studio management, content management, production assistance, and the list goes on. Do you NEED a formal education to get this type of experience or to be educated in this industry? Yes and no. For me, where I was in life prior to going to college I know I never would have figured out everything I know now without school and never would have been ambitious enough to move to NYC, move to Austria, or start my own business and bring my skills with me. BUT I do know I have learned so much since graduating that makes me think “what did I pay for in school that I wasn’t taught this?!” This doesn’t mean I wish I didn’t go to school, it just makes me want to dive deeper into the knowledge I already have to stack it with all the new things I’m learning. There are loads of free education tools online to learn about photo and video along with loads of courses from a variety of sources. My advice to you would be to decide what you think you need and from there vet and double check the heck out of the school, free resource, e-book, masterclass, etc to make sure you trust their ability to teach you what you want to know! I’ve been thinking of writing an e-book (or a few 🤪) on photography and am curious if it’s something y’all would be interested in? 📸 @sonyalpha A7II @tamronusa 17-28mm and 28-200mm with an epic assist from @crosbygracetravels edited using my Strength preset from @lightroom desktop pack #jardín
