Techniques for Making Subjects Stand Out
3 ways to make your subject stand out in the frame
🎨 Pop of color to the environment - if you scroll a couple slides you can see I changed the color of my swimsuit to pop just a little more against this background. Not only did I wear the same color as the rocks (this could be a moment in a different way) it was also the middle of the day when I shot these so the light wasn’t the best to force a pop with either. Don’t be afraid to wear pops of color or change it later.
🔸Contrast in shape of the environment - let’s say your standing in a pin straight grove of trees and you want to stand out against them. Throw you’re arms straight out, look up, and photograph yourself (or your subject) from the waist up. The viewers eye will be forced to look at the subject because the shape is different than the environment.
🪨 Filling an ‘empty’ space in the environment - lets say your photographing someone on a lake in a kayak using a drone and there are dark rocks everywhere under the surface and in the frame. Draw the attention to the kayaker by having them place themselves between the rocks and fill an empty space with the kayak.
