Ditch Perfectionism and Chase Your Dreams

Let’s talk perfectionism, shall we? (Save this post as a reminder to keep kicking perfectionism out of your life!) On Monday we talked about following your dreams and if you’re anything like me your perfectionism is part of the reason it took you so long to start chasing those dreams OR you’re still holding back from starting because you want things to be perfect. Let me tell you a (ridiculous) story. In college I really thought everything I created for assignments was perfect and I was a creative photographer. And according to my grades I was a perfect photographer. Looking back I can see that I had perfectly executed assignments and my images were good but not exciting. This led to me graduating college putting my camera down and seriously struggling to want to pick it up again because I wasn’t landing a perfect job with my perfect portfolio. (There was a little bit of burnout in there too but we’ll talk about that another time.) What I was seriously lacking and am still working on to this day is style and creativity sprinkled with storytelling (it constantly evolves so don’t go thinking one day it will be perfect) and from what I’ve gathered this comes from breaking rules and throwing perfectionism out the window. If you want to learn how to play the guitar do you wait until you can play a song perfectly to start? Well no, because how would you start in the first place? This idea applies to everything in life including following your dreams! So let’s throw perfectionism out the window take those first steps, laugh when we fall down, learn from those first steps, and look back months from now or even tomorrow and say “man I’ve come a long way!” What have you accomplished after throwing perfectionism out the window? • • • • • •
