The @thomsonsafaris tents we called home for nine days. Just posting this makes me miss it. •• This was taken (I believe) at Shira Camp, after the forest line ends as you ascend Kili, at the start of the moorlands. The next biome you hit, the one that takes you to the summit, is alpine desert. •• Two people slept in each tent - shoutout to my incredible roomie @shea_boogs here - and there were additional tents for the porters and guides, two small bathroom tents, as well as a dining tent. Because when it’s literally freezing outside (as it often was at night, or close to it) you prefer your food indoors. •• Getting your stuff organized and a routine down for packing/unpacking, shifting clothes around, and washing (to the extent you can - hello baby wipes) is a little time consuming at first, but you quickly learn to get things done fast, or at least as fast as the reduced oxygen levels will let you. •• Pro tip: towards the end, I moved my daypack and duffel to the head and foot of my sleeping bag, respectively, so I could get water at night and everything I needed clothes- and gear-wise in the freezing dawn temps without leaving my warm REI bag. . . .
