Jessie on a Journey
A metal pan filled with a traditional Mongolian barbecue dish known as 'khorkhog'. The pan contains chunks of meat, likely mutton and chicken, along with large carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. The ingredients have been cooked for several hours using heated river stones, which are visible in the pan, allowing the meat to become tender. A hand is holding utensils, ready to serve the flavorful and aromatic meal. The dish is surrounded by bowls and plates, suggesting a family-style meal in a traditional setting, likely a ger (Mongolian tent).

Traditional Mongolian Barbecue Experience

Traditional Mongolian barbecue 🍖 While doing a ger homestay near Mongolia's Hustai National Park, I had the pleasure of getting to try traditional Mongolian barbecue (known as "khorkhog"). ♨️ Large river stones are collected to be heated and used in the cooking process. The meat - typically mutton, and we also had chicken - is cut into small, bite-sized pieces and seasoned with salt. Additionally, my hosts added veggies like large carrots, potatoes, and cabbage. 🥕 When it's time to cook the meat, a large pot is heated using the stones - which are also added *inside* the pot. Basically, you layer the stones, then the meat/ingredients, and repeat this process. Thick dough is added at the top to help seal the heat. 🥘 The ingredients are cooked for several hours, allowing them to tenderize. ⏰ As a vegetarian, I only ate the veggies & dough, but I will say they were absolutely delicious! 😋 Have you ever tried local barbecue while traveling? ✈️
