Jessie on a Journey
A breathtaking scene of the Solheimajokull Glacier, an outlet glacier of the massive Myrdalsjokull glacier, located in Iceland's South Coast region. The rugged, otherworldly landscape features the glacier's towering ice ridges and crevasses, formed by the melting and retreating of the glacier over time. A mirror-like lake hugs the base of the glacier, reflecting the icy hues and revealing the glacier's rapid retreat due to climate change. Scattered across the black sand slopes are groups of visitors, appearing small against the colossal scale of the natural wonder, hiking and exploring this awe-inspiring glacial environment.

Retreating Glacier in Iceland

One of my favorite natural attractions in Iceland was Solheimajokull Glacier, an outlet glacier of the enormous Myrdalsjokull glacier (which sits atop an active volcano) and a popular stop on a South Coast tour. This glacier provides a lesson in climate change, as it's melting and retreating -- about 1 kilometer in the last 10 years. You can hike on the glacier, though I opted to do the short but scenic trek right up to it. The scenery is otherworldly, with sink holes, icy ridges, black sand slopes and a mirror lake hugging the entire view 😮 . . In 3 words or less, where is your favorite place for a rugged natural view? 🌊
