Eagle Huntress in Mongolia
Meet Aigerim, one of only 3 eagle huntresses (female eagle hunters) in the Bayan-Ölgii province of Mongolia.
✨
I had the pleasure of doing a ger homestay with Aigerim and her family. After showing our @WhoaTravel group how they hunt with the eagles, she shared that her reason for getting into the sport is to be like her dad, Asker, who is also an eagle hunter.
🦅
For a quick cultural overview, hunting with eagles is a traditional practice that has been carried out for centuries in Mongolia, particularly among the Kazakh community. Not only is it a way to earn a living, but it helps people maintain a close bond with nature.
🌿
Typically, golden eagles are used for hunting; often females, as they're generally larger and stronger than their male counterparts.
💪
I'd never heard of eagle hunting before visiting Mongolia, and it was interesting to not only learn more about it but to stay with a family who practices it!
