Amalfi Coast Adventure: Kindness of Strangers
✨#StoryTimeThread ✨👉What’s a sticky situation you’ve gotten out of when traveling?
✨
During a trip to the Amalfi Coast, @pierrepilc and I found a cute Airbnb in the town of Vietri sul Mare. The accommodation was pretty remote but had a balcony with a nice view.
🌅
One thing we neglected to look up was how early restaurants + public transportation shut down in the area where we were. Apparently, at 7:30pm on a weekday, it was lights out.
😴
Opening Google Maps, it didn’t look very far to walk to the main town for dinner; maybe 30 minutes. The walk was fine at first, but as we continued quiet street soon turned to highway, with cars zooming like they were in NASCAR.
🏎️
I have no idea what pushed us to walk on this highway for a minute, let alone as long as we did; but it got to a point where it would have been more dangerous to turn back than to continue forward.
🥺
So we walked, holding our phones up with their tiny flashlights, hoping the fast cars would see the flecks of light.
😮
Finally, we made it into the main part of town and found a restaurant. Before sitting, we asked our waiter if it would be possible to get a cab in 2 hours or so.
🚖
"Nessun problema!" He smiled. Andy and I feasted on spaghetti with clams and fried fish - paired with Italian wine, which was much needed after our terrifying walk.
🍝
Happy and full, we asked for the check + if the waiter could call a cab for us. He nodded, though returned shortly with bad news: “There are no more cabs tonight.”
😰
The waiter noticed the dread on my face. “One moment,” he said, rushing away. When he came back he had some news: “My uncle will pick you up and drop you off at your Airbnb!”
🤔
I’d be lying if I said the New Yorker in me wasn’t wary of this offer. But we were pleasantly relieved to find the uncle was genuinely just a nice guy who was willing to help a pair of random tourists.
🌍
It was a beautiful moment that showed the kindness of strangers.
