Rescued Street Dog in Sri Lanka
This is the story of a street dog that stole my heart… part 1 ⤵️
I found Atlas when she was 2 months old covered in ticks and fleas without her mother. She ran up to me on the beach and it was love at first sight. But our story is much more complicated than this.
I was advised to leave her where I found her in case her mom was around which was so hard for me to do but I wanted to do what was right. Too often, tourists take puppies (with the best intentions) but when they can’t find a sustainable solution, they end up back on the street which ultimately is even WORSE.
I contacted a wonderful organization here that vaccinates and sterilizes street dogs and fate would have it that they were having a free clinic the very next day. They also advised me to take her to the vet to treat her ticks and fleas.
I didn’t have a solution right away to take her off the street as I was traveling around Sri Lanka in a tuktuk. Fortunately, I befriended a local who has become a guardian for Atlas and the other dogs that like her have been dropped off there.
We joined forces, I buy fish, rice and dog food and he prepares the rice and fish for the dogs every single day. When I am away, he looks after them. He told me he has cared for thousands of street dogs in his lifetime. A reminder that there is still good in this world…
Although this kind uncle is helping feed the dogs every day, it’s a lot for one person. I would love to get these dogs into loving homes, they are so sweet + lovable. If you or someone you know wants to adopt a Sri Lankan street dog, feel free to send me a message!
Otherwise, stay tuned for part 2 of this story, I can’t wait to share what happens to Atlas and I next…
