Picturesque Santorini Sunset
» Often I will see great travel pictures online and think “wow I really want to go there”... only to get there and realise that the reality is so much different to my expectations. People will edit crowds out of their pictures or get up at 5am to take photos with a place when it’s empty. So when we ended up getting to Oía just a few hours before sunset, prime time for crowds, we were expecting lots of people - but luckily it wasn’t too bad.
Although the crowds weren’t too bad, they were definitely there (swipe for a quick video of the sunset crowd), but I’ve experienced SO much worse while visiting such popular places. I think we must have gotten lucky that there were no cruise ships docked, and that we are visiting in October when it’s naturally less busy. We were told to head to “sunset view point” by our bus driver, which is where the video was taken and clearly a place that will be busy at sunset. We had a quick gander to see what it was all about, then set off walking against the crowds to find quieter places. And there were SO many. Every street was more beautiful than I imagined. Use the sunset as a diversion to see all the other highlights of the town, like where I took this picture. This is one of the most famous spots in Oía, yet there was no one else there during the sunset!
