Relax and Embrace the Homeschool Journey
August means time for “school” — and for my yearly reminder for you to relax, trust, and loosen your plans.
I’m Bobbie. I was you nine years ago when we started this homeschool journey. I read all the stuff. I printed all the cute worksheets. I made the little learning books with page protectors. I spent big bucks on math curriculum for the kindergartener. I used up way too much time planning crafts and foods we never made - and felt like a “failure” when we didn’t do it.
Don’t be like me.
✋Quit looking at all the curriculum.
✋Look at your life. Not the pretty ones online.
✋Don’t compare your kid to the “expected” timelines.
❤️ Let them be little.
❤️Soak up the cuddles and nap times and library story times.
And ask yourself why.
❓Are you pushing your unprepared 5 year old to write letters because that’s what the neighbor can do?
❓Are you forcing him to sit with you and “read” the BOB books because that’s what the school district says they should do?
❓Are you memorizing history sentences because then at Christmas you can show family all you’ve learned?
The years fly by. Your kids will figure it out. Every year will be different, and you’ll try to figure it out again. Make a life of learning and look for the opportunities everywhere. And usually not on worksheets.
Our family is entering year nine, and I still don’t have this thing 100% figured out.
Listen to the wisdom of moms who have done it for years and can look back with real advice.
Let them tell you what they wish they’d done differently.
And don’t be too proud to ask for help.
