Mammoth Fossils at Waco Mammoth National Monument
Bet you don’t know this! There are mammoths in Texas…
Going from Dallas to Austin, most people stop in Waco, Texas to shop at Chip and JoJo’s overcrowded, expensive Magnolia store. Skip that zoo and head west out of town to do some family learning! You’ll save so much money. 🤣
‼️Check out Waco Mammoth National Monument🦴🐘🔎
When the fossil site was found in the 1970s, several mammoths were removed to a local museum. Since then, the fossil dig site has been preserved and covered by a building.
🦴The remaining six Ice Age Colombian mammoths remain in place (in situ) at the dig site in addition to the tooth of a saber-toothed cat and Western camel.
🥾Take a small hike from the visitor center to enter the enclosed dig site which additionally shows how the fossils are excavated and preserved. When you’re done at the site, go take another hike!
💲Because of an agreement with the city of Waco, there is a small fee that your National Park Pass won’t cover. But it’s worth it!
💻Even if you aren’t planning to head to Texas, check out their online virtual tour of the dig site. Isn’t it amazing that we can do these things virtually?
👀If you’re looking to add some more ancient history to your Texas travels, check out Dinosaur Valley State Park to see preserved dinosaur footprints! @dinovalleysp
