Lego Storytelling

“It all happened in 1775.” . . Pretty good start to a story I think especially when the 8 year old is making up a story based on the American family running away from the British invasion. Why was this on her mind? Because we had just read a book that morning about such. . . She has been daily bringing me Lego creations and telling me what they are. This time, I channeled my inner Julie Bogart and jotted down the story she told me. We read it out. Clarified some things. Added more details. Explained some things better. Printed it out. And she excitedly gave it to Daddy to read when he got home. . . Don’t worry about “school at home”. This counts! You read good books and they go off and let them simmer a bit longer. And, sometimes, turn it into their own something. Validate their creativity. Make them known that what they’re telling is like coming up with a story. . . And most importantly that Mom made them a priority for a bit, put her stuff aside, and was fully focused on their busy work of childhood. . . A reminder to me to be fully present. Because it can become a beautiful thing.
