John Brown: His Fight for Freedom - Children's Book Review
Picture books aren’t out grown; you just haven’t found excellent ones like this one! I love it when I accidentally get a book that ties in so much that we have been reading while adding in brand new information. And wonder why I hadn’t heard of it!

All I knew was the song about John Brown’s body and that Harper’s Ferry had something bad that happened there. Didn’t know when or what - all that college paying off, right? Now I do know and so do my kids.

Just look at those pictures. They’re told more like a tall tale. @johnhendrix also did Shooting at Stars and some other books that are on my radar.

Covered here: John Brown, abolition, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Civil War, The Underground Railroad and new to us - Bleeding Kansas. Very adventure packed in the battle scene. Fascinating! I will add, it also talks about him being hung and committing murder, so it brings up tons of the “what would you have done?” conversations. Such an excellent addition to our slavery picture books we’ve been working through.

Add it to your list. Any other excellent happy American history book accidents you’ve stumbled across? I need more!
