Next is 'Molokai' by Alan Brennert, a historical fiction novel set in a leper colony in Hawaii, with a woman's portrait on the cover. 'The Little Shop of Found Things' by Paula Brackston has a whimsical cover displaying an antique shop window with various objects. 'Citizens Creek' by Lalita Tademy is a historical fiction novel about the first Black Indian chief, with a serene nature scene on the cover. Lastly, 'Four Seasons in Rome' by Anthony Doerr features a scenic view of Rome, likely representing the travel literature genre.

Homeschool Mom's Unconventional Reading List

I would like to scream out from the rooftops that just because you’re a homeschool mom, you don’t have to bore yourself to death with the classics and snobby old dead authors ;) I’m a rebel. But my kids are learning to love to read by watching me. That’s the goal. . . Some of my reads during quarantine... or finishes. Since friends are always looking for suggestions. Looking at the list, it definitely shows my top three: dystopian, historical fiction, and travel. What does that say about my personality? ;) There are some not as exciting I plowed through and plenty still to be finished. These are my top picks. And don’t ask to borrow... All but one was Scribd ;) . . — Timeline — a reread. Possibly my first historical fiction read from a decade ago. Familiar and fun. . . —- Molokai — I started this to read in Hawai’i but didn’t get into it until two weeks ago. It was so interesting about the leper colony and life at the time as well as the stigma in society. Not something we deal with today. Historical fiction. . . — The Little Shop of Found Things - modern day vs back in time. Kinda historical fiction. Fun and lighthearted. I also listened to the sequel The Chocolate House. . . —- The Running Man — dystopian, not scary Stephen King. Don’t be turned off by the lame-o movie we watched afterward. —- Citizen’s Creek - a based on real people historical fiction about the first Black, former slave Indian chief. Fascinating. I had no idea Native Americans had slaves. . . —- Four Seasons in Rome - travel literature from the author of All the Light We Cannot See. Beautifully written. I needed to travel and didn’t know Hawai’i was in my near future. :) Typical travel literature reminding us the we Americans are too busy and need to savor life. . . What books do I need to add to my list?
