Reclaiming Wonders
A young boy with blond hair is standing barefoot on a hardwood floor, wearing a Batman t-shirt and blue denim shorts. He is smiling brightly at the camera. Behind him is a large chalkboard or blackboard, on which the boy has drawn an intricate and detailed scene depicting the solar system. The drawing shows a large circle representing the moon, complete with craters and a planted American flag. There is also a depiction of a ringed planet, likely Saturn, and what appears to be an asteroid belt. A space shuttle is shown landing, and several human figures are depicted catching or batting away asteroids with sticks. The drawing demonstrates an impressive understanding of space and astronomical concepts for a child of the boy's age.

Five-Year-Old's Impressive Drawing of the Solar System

When I sit back and question if my five year old is learning enough, I will remember this drawing he did on his own during morning time. How he drew the moon full of craters with the “planet with the rings” and the asteroid belt. He had just recreated the solar system the day before before in #classicalconversations science. And the space shuttle landing and the flag on the moon. When I asked him which country’s flag, he rolled his eyes at me. “America...”. Duh. We’ve been devouring all the space picture books we can find. And, of course, all the people on his drawing who are catching the asteroids to whack them toward each other with the stick they’re holding. Because... boy ;) The super short formal lessons he does are very limited and usually consist of math games with dice, but I think he doing pretty well. Little sponges.
