Exploring an Underground Railroad Site in Memphis

Underground Railroad site in Memphis? I definitely moved this up the list, and today we went to Slave Haven and did ALL the learning. . This simple slavery and Underground Railroad museum is in the 150 year old house of Jacob Burkle, two blocks from the Mississippi River. While some say it wasn’t a stop on the UGRR, the museum tour says it was complete with the secret exit to the outside and tunnel leading under the house to the cellar with air holes and an extra back stairwell. Either way, can’t disprove it so why not? So much learning here. . The tour started with slavery and took us back to the beginning in Africa. We saw abolitionists we’ve learned and quilts which guided the way and had our eyes opened about facts we had never heard… and will continue to research - Do sharks still follow path of slave ships? . The museum is run by a non-profit so this is nothing fancy. But the walls are so full of knowledge we all should be exposed to. I wish it could be given a big grant to make it even better. . They had a restored photograph of the slaves stacked in the ships. Like on shelves. Feet sticking out with only inches above. I had seen the sketch from above with the people shoved so close together… but not this other one. That’s one visual we will take with us. . So much history coming to life! I especially loved that we white people on the tour could have good learning about African American history from a black lady. So excellent. And respectful. . Anyone have any other UGRR places you’ve seen? I’d love to go to another one and compare. . No picture allowed inside! 😟
