When to Persevere vs. Pivot
Perseverance vs. pivot -
I was listening to the story of Instagrams founding yesterday and there was a really interesting concept I gleaned from some of the various interviews. Sometimes pivoting is better than persevering. -
For those unfamiliar with the story, basically the founders of Instagram created a completely different app at first called BURBN. It was essentially a check in app where people could also post photos of themselves at the location. The photo posting part was secondary. The only problem was, it was a flop. Although they had $500k of investment, they only had 100 users after a few months. They were faced with a choice. Either: -
1. Persevere with the current failing idea. -
2. Pivot their idea and build off of what was already working. -
They decided to go with option 2 and the rest is history. So this got me thinking, why does our culture push the idea of pushing the struggle as the heroic option? Sure there are definitely times where this is necessary, but there’s also plenty of times where pivoting and capitalizing on your strengths and cutting your losses is the smarter move. -
In the case if Instagram, if they would have decided to persevere with BURBN by changing their marketing strategy, adding new features, advertising more, etc. instagram may have never been created. -
So the question is, what are you persevering at that you should be pivoting against? -
Be blessed and stay stoked 😎🤙 -
