The True Meaning of Christmas
What is the true magic of Christmas?
This time of year is filled with tradition, not the least of which is the ever growing list of iconic Christmas films. They all seem to share a different narrative on how to GET the magic of Christmas:
Elf: sing loud and spread Christmas cheer to power Santa’s sleigh (and save Christmas)
Christmas story: remember being a kid at Christmas to relive the magic
Jingle all the way: if you get the perfect gift you’ll find christmas magic
Grinch: Christmas magic is found through gifting and enjoying time with loved ones.
Christmas vacation: materialism and pursuit of perfection will destroy your joy. Find joy in the moments.
Some of these have elements of truth but still miss the mark. The only classic I can think of that comes close to the true magic is a Christmas carol.
In the movie Scrooge is visited by 3 ghosts in his dreams. One that shows where he came from, one that shows his present, and one that shows the nightmare to come if he doesn’t change.
Scrooge wakes up from the nightmare a different man. That’s what Jesus calls the good news and it’s what the true magic of Christmas is.
Jesus came to show that we had a horrible past and our present isn’t any better. We are hopeless and destined to the nightmare (hell) we could never escape unless we receive his free gift of mercy. Christmas is about waking up from the nightmare a changed person, not because of what you did, but because of what Christ did for you.
Jesus came to deal with our horrible past, our sin, our mistakes, and became a sacrifice so we could experience fullness of life in communion with God. He became human so he could fully relate with humans and empathize with us. That is the magic of Christmas!
Be blessed and stay stoked 😎🤙
