The Pros and Cons of Remote Work
Can I be real for a minute. -
Although the rise of the work at home, “be your own boss,” and entrepreneur desire has risen to an all time high and in a lot of ways is incredible, I am worried that isolating ourselves for hours on end in front of a computer screen or alone at a cafe will make this generation one of the most depressed and lonely generation yet. -
Listen, I have nothing against any of those things. In fact I would identify myself in all of the above categories, however I can tell you that some of my loneliest days are the days that I am being the most “productive.” -
We were designed to live in community so when you take that away (even if you still Skype or FaceTime) it is detrimental to our mental health. -
I know a lot of times we see the typical 9-5 demonized, but In that aspect I find having a typical job to be extremely beneficial. The concept of being your own boss is a myth because even if you don’t work for a company, you are still answering to clients, customers, or investors. You are never truly hands off. Having a job is not a bad thing! -
However it’s not for everyone. I know that it’s not for me personally, but I have to take time to intentionally put things in perspective and socialize or else I start to go crazy. To me there’s 3 things that you need to know before jumping into the full time remote work/entrepreneurship realm. -
1. Why do you want it? If it’s more money or more freedom, you may get it but there also may be unintended consequences. -
2. Work life balance. No one can sustain being in front of a screen for days at a time. You need to take time for real human interaction. -
3. What is your purpose. Does a remote job opportunity serve that or would you be better off at a traditional job? -
I know IG glamorizes the idea of not having a job, but not having a job, quite honestly is more work than I ever had with a “real job.” -
Be blessed and stay stoked 😎🤙 •
