The Perils of Unchecked Authenticity
One of the biggest cliches on social media these days is “live authentic” or “live your truth” or “be yourself.” -
Although this sounds good and dandy in a simplified Disney world, it’s actually extremely dangerous. If to be authentic means to be who we really are and express what we really feel, then in most cases we are all hypocrites. Prisons are filled with people who acted on their feelings and impulses. If authenticity is about being true to your feelings, then these people should be our role models. -
But they’re not, and yet people are still touting the live your truth jargon. So is authenticity really even achievable? -
In a full sense I don’t think so, however I also don’t think being authentic is what we should strive for anyway. -
Our culture puts an increasing value on authenticity and decreasing value on integrity. If we’re not careful authenticity can become a new word for arrogance (as it often does) creating a platform to judge others that don’t fit in line with your idea of yourself. But as long as your true to yourself who can blame you right lol? -
If you are truly committed to being a genuine person, you need to first look past your own quirks and differences and establish what you’re made of and what your values are. Just because you’re currently a certain way doesn’t mean it’s right, and also doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. -
Authenticity without integrity is lethal. Be careful what you promote. -
Be blessed and stay stoked😎🤙 -
PS swipe to see the before on this shot. Pretty drastic difference!
