My Approach to Goal Setting

My unpopular opinion on goal setting šŸ‘‡ With the year winding down, lots of people are making resolutions and goals for the upcoming year. I know it may be surprising but Iā€™m not really a huge goal setter. I typically have 2-3 big vision goals and a few smaller ones, but I find keeping it simple, at least for me, makes it more attainable. In the past I would set BHAG (big hairy audacious goals) but Iā€™ve found that although they sound cool, they arenā€™t real practical. Not in the fact I canā€™t accomplish them but in the execution. If I say my goal is to land 2 new accounts this month, Iā€™m leaving factors out of my control and I could easily get discouraged when it doesnā€™t happen. I essentially make the win closing 2 accounts so anything else is a subconscious loss. But if I say my goal is to send 20 new outreach messages everyday, I make the goal unreasonable not to happen (and in many cases happen faster). Therefore my ā€œsuccessā€ is not dictated on whether I achieve the outcome I want or not, but rather success is defined by did I do the action or not. Did I send 20 outreach messages? Yes? Great thatā€™s a win regardless of the response. So instead of focusing on the big goal, I focus on creating goals around the processes that are required to hit the goal and make it unreasonable not to succeed. But that first requires understanding what the process even is. Just dropped a video on my pitching process on my YouTube so Iā€™d highly recommend checking it out!
