Influence and Social Responsibility
So I’ve been thinking a lot about this concept lately, that so many so called influencers are actually terrible influences. -
And I’m not talking about how they supposedly make you covet what they have in a fake life because that’s quite honestly your own problem that you should deal with apart from social media. You don’t need Instagram to hide likes to regain your self esteem. I’m talking about what’s being promoted. Things like drugs, alcohol, obscenities, and sex are not only tolerated, but worshipped. In fact they are rewarded for this type of behavior through social validation AKA likes and comments. People are encouraged to be this way because they are being “different”. But the paradox of trying to be different is that everyone is trying to be different and in doing so are all after the same pursuit. -
Now before I say anything else, I already know I’m gonna offend some people and that’s ok. If you want to be offended fine, but hear me out first. -
I’m not here to judge anyone. You can do whatever you want, however I think it points to a flaw in our society that the thing we desire to see most is the very vices that constrain so many people. A lot of this stuff that’s being promoted, when done consistently over a long period of time, is actually extremely harmful. We make jokes about how we are gonna drink away the weekend and I get that it’s all in good fun, but it’s not when you’re 50 and an alcoholic. -
My point is not to be Debbie downer but to be conscious of what you support and by extension, what you promote. If there’s not an audience for it, people will stop doing it. I’m not unrealistic though and I realize all this stuff has been going on since the beginning of time, I just want to seed the idea that just because it’s what the “cool” kids are doing, doesn’t mean it’s right or good. Take what these so called influencers do and say with a grain of salt and do your own research. Don’t support the bad influence. -
Be blessed and stay stoked 😎🤙
