Backpacking Tips for Beginners
How long has it been since you’ve been outside?
Ready to jump into backpacking before the summer’s over? It’s not too late!
Here are some tips to help you prepare if you’ve never been. Save this for later or share with a friend.
1. Research top places to go in your area, and search by mileage and elevation gain you feel comfortable with in making your selection (don’t overdo it when new - there are plenty of options out there < 5 miles to start)
- Read the recent trip reports from the week to check on trail conditions, bug situations, snow, etc.
2. Download the map to the area on all trails and the map for the trailhead on google offline maps
3. REI does gear rentals for things like bear cans, backpacks, pads, etc. - if you’re new and need Gear it’s a great option to test things out before making the investment.
- There are also used gear locations like wonderland gear exchange in Seattle
4. Pack in advance (lookup packing tips on Pinterest for weight distribution) and ensure your bag is weighted enough for you to manage to carry it and that you custom fit it to your body by adjusting straps where needed
5. FOOD - start with the tried and true method -dehydrated meals from REI, oatmeal, and snacks when you’re new… as you get more comfortable and learn what you like, you can start to make your own meals and menus.
6. Bring comfy essentials to help you rest; fresh socks to sleep in, an eye mask, a beanie, ear plugs, a pillow, and sweat pants for the night.
7. HAVE FUN AND TAKE IT ALL IN!
