DIY Watermelon Math Activity
Summertime is all about the watermelon! We made this crafty watermelon out of a dollar store pizza pan so magnet “seeds” can stick to it. We found lots of fun ways to use it so the kids can practice their math skills all summer long—no boring worksheet required. Check out the directions below.
Supplies: Dollar store pizza pan Small magnets Red and green craft paper Glue
Directions: Cut out the paper to look like a watermelon with a red half circle and a green “C” shape for the edge. Attach it to your pizza pan with glue. Once it’s dry it is ready to use.
Learning to count: Take the seeds off and ask the child to add a certain number of seeds to the watermelon. You can even hold up a number card or write the number down for your child to see and learn.
Matching amounts: Place a number of seeds above the watermelon on the shiny pizza plate surface and then have the child mirror that amount of seeds on the watermelon. Simple addition: Verbally ask a math question and have the child answer in watermelon seed placement! Skip counting: Assign a value to each seed and have the child figure out how many are represented by skip counting.
Pattern making: Use spacing between seeds to create a pattern that needs to be finished.
