Greece is an endless coastline. Almost anywhere you are in Greece, you’re rarely more than an hour, an hour and a half’s drive from the water. Most people are even closer than that.

The coast weaves in and out constantly, creating beautiful little bays and protected beaches and marinas nearly everywhere. Along with hundreds of inhabited and thousands of uninhabited islands, that’s why such a small country has one of the longest coastlines in the world (8,500 miles - ranked 11th according to World Factbook, just behind China).

For this reason, it’s hard to overestimate how important the sea has always been to Greece. To its history, to its economy, to its lifestyle, to its culture. Our flag itself has the blue of the Mediterranean on it.

The smell of salt, the sea breeze, the feeling of sand under my feet, the sound of waves slowly rolling in and pulling back, are always linked with home for me. Any time I get nostalgic, I go running to the water ❤️
