The face of a woman ready for a vacation.
••
In all seriousness, I want to take a minute to talk about the ridiculous notions that hustle culture has put into our heads, one of the most toxic of which is: “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
••
No matter how much you love your job, rest and leisure and play are a non-negotiable part of the human condition. Not only do we become unhealthy, irritable, dumber, and overall shittier people when we don’t take a break; our work, the thing we feel the need to sacrifice our well-being for, also suffers.
••
Our creativity and innovation cannot thrive if we’re always rushing around and working. You know that feeling late at night before a test in school? When you suddenly realized you had read the same sentence five times and understood none of it? And you needed sleep to reboot your brain?
••
We need rest beyond sleep to reboot our imagination. And it doesn’t matter what field you work in - creative, business, STEM, education, service, manual labor - your connection to yourself, your inner human self, is integral to doing and feeling your best.
••
I say this so I myself can also hear it. This year has brought me great opportunities and projects, which I am immensely thankful for, and during which I barely got an entire day off - including weekends. With the exception of a great bachelorette party in June ❤️. I feel the need for that reset.
••
Yes, I have been using IG posts and videos from a three day weekend two months ago, and summers of yore, to upload here. Cause Instagram never 🟰 real life.
••
So here’s to putting our humanity ahead of our productivity. It’s summer! Go play! I’m off to sea tomorrow!
