For my 90s kids, tell me “Arabian Nights” didn’t immediately start playing in your head the second you saw this photo. I can’t be the only one. And heads up, the next week on Instagram is mostly going to be different photos from in and around this mosque - I can’t help myself, it’s stunning.

The blazing sun sets right behind the domes (qubba), symbolizing the vault of heaven. This particular mosque has four minarets, the tall towers, where the calls to prayer (azaan, athan or adhan - depending on region) are announced.

All this can be viewed from the sahn, the mosque’s open courtyard attached to the front of the structure. There are fountains and water here, both for practical use for a religion founded and widely practiced in hot lands, and for spiritual use, for ablutions done before prayer.
