Standing on a pyramid! There are specially designated walkways, don’t just stand anywhere!
••
For how well known the pyramids are, archaeologists are not 100% sure why (or even how) they were built in the first place.
••
Some Egyptologists believe they are tombs. Some believe they were built to show off the grandeur and splendor of ancient Egypt.
••
Whatever the case, the construction of these pyramids was an incredible feat for the time. The Great Pyramid of Giza (Khufu) was built in 20 years, completed in 2560 BC. That means they were completed a longer time away (BC) from 0 AD than we are now. The other two were built in subsequent eras, as was the Sphinx.
••
The Great Pyramid is the only remaining site of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Seeing these towering structures in person was incredible. If you look towards the top of the pyramids, you can see the limestone coating that originally covered the whole pyramids - most of the sand colored stones you see now are actually part of the internal structure, as time has worn away the shiny outer coating.
