What is the most impulsive trip you’ve ever taken? #ppspontaneity @passionpassport @hoteltonight
••
Mine is definitely my trip to #Svalbard. It started because me and another writer I admired and spoke to occasionally kept saying we should meet up in real life at some point. Given our travel schedules, we would say it, yet it never happened.
••
Then one day, I realized I had some free time coming up at the end of the year and wasn’t sure where to go. Craving an impulsive adventure, I decided to leave the destination to chance. So I messaged my writer friend and we decided I’d pick a day and he’d say a place, and we might as well meet up while I made a trip out of it. I said I’m free December 15 - my friend told me he’d be in Tromso, Norway.
••
Faced with the prospect of going to the Arctic Circle in winter, the summer-loving beach girl inside me reacted thusly: 🙄.
••
But the more I saw images of reindeer and the Northern Lights, the more I decided it would be a great experience. I booked my trip 10 days out, and later on realized Tromso was the northernmost city in the world.
••
So what was the natural next question? “Hmm...I wonder where the northernmost town in the world is”. Turns out...about an hour and a half flight away, on the island of Svalbard.
••
And that’s how I spent an amazing 10 days in the Norwegian Arctic, and 4 of those days on magical Svalbard. I experienced one of the most extreme environments on earth, learned about the great resilience and love of nature of the people living there, and admired the passion they had for this enchanting Arctic home.
